CUSTODIAN / BUS DRIVER
DEFINITION OF WORK:
Under general supervision of the Director of Maintenance, Operations, and Transportation or designee and
the direction of the School Site Principal, performs general cleaning and custodial functions at a
designated site(s); responsible for assuring that assigned site location(s) is safe and secure; operates a
school bus in a safe manner at all times to transport students over designated routes and to special events.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following is a list of duties that are representative of the position and include, but are not limited to, the
following:
DUTIES SPECIFIC TO CUSTODIAN
* Performs custodial functions at assigned site location(s) in the District
* Assumes responsibility for building security
* Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes, polishes, shampoos and/or vacuums concrete, linoleum, tile, wood
and carpeted floors and vacuums rugs and carpets in offices, rooms, classrooms, and cafeterias,
maintenance and transportation buildings
* Cleans interior of buildings including but not limited to walls, mirrors, furniture, woodwork, window
ledges, doors, drinking fountains and hand railings
* Cleans windows (exterior and interior)
* Periodically dusts furniture, window and doorframe ledges
* Empties and cleans waste containers
* Washes, scrubs and disinfects rest rooms and shower rooms
* Keeps restrooms supplied at all times
* Uses power blower to maintain cleanliness of hallways and other student areas
* Maintains equipment used in course of work
* Assembles and/or makes minor repairs or adjustments to furniture
* Assists in moving and rearranging chairs, tables, desks, file cabinets, cartons, records, audio-visual
and other equipment
* Removes recycled waste to central storage area
* Reports safety, sanitary and fire hazards to supervisor
* Maintains communications with appropriate supervisor at all times while on duty
* Assists in maintenance of stock inventory
* Maintains equipment used in the course of work
* May work from a prepared work schedule
* Performs a security checks or locks, doors, windows, and storage areas and turns on/off security
systems as assigned
* Performs minor maintenance duties such as changing light bulbs and adjusting/repairing student
desks
* Performs minor repairs to doors, locks and hinges and sharpeners
* Stores and distributes textbooks, office and custodial supplies delivering to appropriate site
personnel, upon request
* Assists food service staff in storing commodities delivered to site, when available
* Sets up and takes down chairs and/or tables for meetings or activities at site
* Performs special/seasonal custodial work as assigned
* Assists in maintenance projects as assigned
* Performs job related duties as assigned
DUTIES SPECIFIC TO BUS DRIVER
* Operates a school bus within prescribed routes and time schedules, as well as for field trips and
special activities, to transport students and adults safely and efficiently
* Picks up and discharges students
* Maintains student log with parent/guardian information
* Escorts and assists children on and off vehicles and across streets or roadways, when required or as
necessary
* Evacuates vehicle in a safe and timely manner when necessary and conducts periodic drills as
required by law
* May service busses with fuel
* Maintains cleanliness of bus daily, may wash and wax vehicles
* Conducts safety and operations inspections of assigned vehicle daily, advises on necessary repairs
* Maintains accurate daily record of mileage, time, fuel, oil, student count, route sheets, etc.
* Prepares routine reports as required
* Attends mandatory driver training programs to maintain current knowledge of California Vehicle
Code and the Education Code as it applies to the operation of vehicles in the transporting of school
children
* Administers first aid as necessary
* Maintains good order and proper discipline among the students on buses and encourages same while
students are waiting at bus stops, following district policies regarding the disciplining of children, and
contact with parents and other citizens
* Reports incidents that affect the safety of pupils
* Attend meetings related to assignment
* Performs other related duties as assigned
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CHARACTERISTICS:
* Physical, mental, and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position,
sustain moderate to heavy physical effort for eight (8) hours
* Must be able to handle hazardous materials safely, work with solvents, detergents, and other
cleaning chemicals, and tolerate exposure to electrical hazards.
* Must have an adequate range of motion in the upper extremities; exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or
windy conditions
* Speaking ability in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal
conversational distances on the telephone, radio and addressing groups
* Hearing sufficient to communicate in person and hold conversations in normal range (approximately
60 decibels); work in a high noise level environment
* Visual acuity for the purposes of distinguishing between colors and shades of color, driving a vehicle,
reading printed materials such as labels, safety materials, equipment manuals
* Sustain constant attention to vehicle operation, and traffic and road conditions while maintaining
appropriate student passenger behavior for extended periods
• Physical agility to sit, stand, kneel, walk, push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, climb stairs, and to
reach overhead
• Physical stamina sufficient to sit for prolonged periods
• Physical strength sufficient to infrequently lift and/or carry 50 or more pounds; occasionally lift 80 or
more pounds with assistance
• Occasionally push and/or pull a variety of tools, equipment, or objects weighing 80 or more pounds
• Exhibit a full range of motion for shoulder external rotation and internal rotation, shoulder abduction
and adduction, elbow flexion and extension, shoulder extension and flexion range of motion capable
of reaching and operating bus and communications controls
• Exhibit a full range of motion for back lateral flexion, hip flexion and extension, and knee flexion
• Physical tolerance to be exposed to dust, pollen, specific agents/chemicals, cleaners, foul smells
• Work in a wide range of temperatures; work in both indoor and outdoor environments with exposure
to extreme weather conditions which include but are not limited to; heat, cold, rain, wind, and high
humidity
• Manual dexterity necessary to use two-way radio controls and conduct vehicle inspections
• Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw
valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A pre-employment physical is a requirement of the candidate section process for this position.
Education:
• Any combination of education equal to a high school diploma
Experience:
• Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the applicant with the
knowledge and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the job.

Ability to:
• Complete the California State Department of Education School Bus Driver training course Drive a
school bus or other automotive equipment safely and efficiently

• Use good judgment in recognizing scope of authority
• Learn and use technology and computer software applications as appropriate to the work environment
• Read, understand, interpret, and follow laws, rules, regulations, processes, policies, and methods of
the office, the District, and the State of California
• Establish and maintain co-operative relationships with those contacted during the performance of
required duties, including students, school personnel, parents, vendors, co-workers, and the
community
• Perform under demanding and varied work schedule with ability to remain flexible and focused
during interruptions and distractions
• Communicate effectively in the English language, both orally and in writing
• Understand and be sensitive to those of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
• Understand and follow oral and written directions
• Determine and meet schedules and time lines
• Perform mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy

Licenses and Certifications:
• Valid Class B-P California Operator’s License
• California Special Driver’s certificate issued every five (5) years by the California Highway Patrol
• Valid Medical DL 51 Certificate
• Valid First Aid Certificate
BUSDRIVER TRAINING PROGRAM:
An employee hired into a Custodian/Bus Driver position is required to enter into a training program and
obtain the required license within six (6) months from the date of hire, if the employee is not already
licensed. During the training program and for six (6) months following certification, a Custodian/Bus Driver
shall be paid at Range 14. Upon completion of six (6) months of service as a fully trained and licensed
school bus driver, the Custodian/Bus Driver shall be paid at Range 15, retroactively, according to the terms
of the CSEA contract.

Salary Placement: Range: 15 of the CSEA Classified Salary Schedule I
