Description
Under general supervision, provides library services to employees, students and the public in a professional manner; performs general technical services in circulation, reserves, catalog assistance, serials management, materials preservation, and database and collection maintenance to assist library patrons with print, audio-visual and other electronic materials; utilizes computer programs to organize, input and retrieve library materials and information; and performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
A Library Technician uses an automated system to input and retrieve data to assist library patrons with access to print, audio-visual and other electronic materials and performs technical duties related to circulation. A Library Technician is distinguished from the Senior Library Technician in that an incumbent in the latter class has a higher level of technical knowledge required to perform more technical circulation and cataloging duties and performs lead-level duties required to maintain efficient operation of the department.
Examples of Duties
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
- Assists patrons with information and circulation; uses Integrated Library System (ILS) to lend, return and shelve circulatory materials and electronic media and equipment including laptops, calculators and camera equipment; performs media stocking; processes electronic items, organizes and maintains library audio-visual materials and equipment; organizes and maintains anatomical models (e.g. mannequins) and other instructional equipment, including breakdown, assembly, and minor repairs; labels and tests items to ensure proper functionality.
- Assists students, faculty, employees, and other patrons with and explains library services, policies, and procedures; responds to email and online inquiries and provides in-person assistance with computer, printer, copy machine, scanner and other library tools and equipment; provides instructional support services using library computers and media.
- Prepares assigned service area for daily operation; initiates computer programs and applications in preparation for patron use at opening; manages access to library computers through the college’s user access control procedures; monitors reports on library activities according to policies and procedures; maintains library space to ensure a clean and orderly environment.
- Processes library delinquencies, clears and updates library accounts; reconciles fines and charges, processes and signs employees’ clearances from the library; communicates with other departments to manage holds on accounts.
- Performs basic mending and repairs (including book binding) of library materials and equipment; assists in operating and maintaining Computer and Media Services; monitors and troubleshoots library equipment malfunctions and submits work orders for complex repairs; monitors repair process to completion.
- Administers instructional material lending programs (e.g. “Books on Reserve”); labels and tracks program inventories, checks materials in and out; monitors reservations and follows up on overdue items; coordinates with lending program faculty and support staff.
- Assists in training student workers and volunteers; may monitor student and volunteer work for completeness, accuracy and conformance with District, department and regulatory requirements and standards; assists in training library technicians as needed.
- Performs a variety of support duties for library operations; answers telephones, sorts and routes incoming mail; produces signs, handouts, labels and notices; files materials; maintains an inventory of office supplies and restocks supplies as needed.
- Processes Interlibrary loan (ILL) requests; delivers loan items to main or satellite campuses or arranges for delivery; monitors and stocks satellite campus/off site library lockers; compiles Interlibrary loan statistics and prepares reports according to standards and policies.
- Collaborates with management, faculty librarians, support staff, students, volunteers, and the community on improvements to library programs and services.
- Assists management in the preparation of analytical and statistical reports; participates in developing library service area outcomes.
- Opens and closes library facilities following library safety and security protocols; coordinates with campus security and others when necessary.
- Attends meetings and workshops as directed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- General library methods, procedures, terminology, and equipment.
- Library services modules and software related to cataloging and other processes.
- Basic knowledge of computers, printers, audio-visual equipment and other business equipment used by Library patrons.
- Methods and practices applicable to cataloging, coding and other library processes.
- Library of Congress Classification and shelving systems.
- District library lending rules, policies, and practices including those related to Interlibrary loans.
- Techniques and practices of sound recordkeeping.
- Principles and practices of effective business and educational communication.
- Federal, state and local laws, regulations and court decisions governing area of assignment including Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Skills and Abilities to:
- Learn and perform library practices and online systems including circulation, Interlibrary loans, special collection management for instructional/academic use (“Books on Reserve”), and serials control.
- Perform library public and technical service work accurately and provide effective customer service.
- Interpret and explain library rules, regulations, policies and procedures and apply them in a variety of procedural situations.
- Perform technical duties using ILS and other software to circulate and catalog library materials.
- Provide work instruction and oversight to student employees.
- Maintain complex and detailed records while upholding confidentiality of college and student files and data.
- Organize, plan and prioritize tasks independently to meet deadlines and manage workload.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Operate a computer and use standard business software.
- Exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive, complex and confidential student issues and situations.
- Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
- Demonstrate an understanding of, sensitivity to, and appreciation for the academic, ethnic, socio-economic, disability and gender diversity of students and staff attending or working on a community college campus.
Supplemental Information
A high school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of progressively responsible administrative or relevant technical experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. College-level coursework in library science or library technology is desired.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Regular, part-time, 20 hours per week, 10 months per year classified position at the Main Campus. Weekly Schedule: Monday through Friday, 11:00 am-3:00 pm. Starting salary: $27.37/hour (Step A). Salary range 24 on the CSEA salary schedule: $27.37/hour to $33.27/hour (5 Steps); Vacation and sick leave are accrued on a pro-rated basis. Must become a Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) member.
