Job Title: Registered Veterinary Technician
Location: AFRP Vet Clinic, Ryan Ranch, Monterey
FLSA Classification: Contractor; temporary; hourly
Hours: 24 hrs/wk
Reports To: Staff Veterinarian
Expected Hours: 16-24 hours per week
Schedule: Tuesdays & Thursdays (8 hours); Wednesdays & Saturdays (4 hours) as needed/available
Salary: $36.50/hourly; DOE
SUMMARY
We are seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and proactive Registered Veterinary Technician to join our team. This is a temporary position to cover staff maternity leave.
Under the direction and guidance of the Staff Veterinarian and Operations Manager, this position is responsible for the following duties at the Animal Friends Rescue Project Veterinary Clinic listed below in detail.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Duties & Responsibilities
- Anesthesia induction, monitoring and recovery
- Surgical preparation, assistance and recovery
- Collect blood samples, perform laboratory testing in house and submit lab samples to our outside diagnostic laboratory
- Provide support to veterinarians during diagnostic, surgical, and dental procedures
- Administer prescribed medications, injections, and treatments
- Safely restrain patients during exams and treatments
- IV catheter placement
- Ability to take radiographs
- Ability to perform dental procedures
- CPR ready and the ability to calculate drug dosages are required
- Fill prescriptions and administer medications, including proper documentation, logging, and security of controlled drugs
- Clean and maintain equipment after each procedure
- Ensure surgical suites and treatment areas are clean, stocked and prepared
- Sterilize surgical instruments and uphold clinic cleanliness, including laundry duties
- Record medical notes and charges in ShelterLuv & Clinic HQ systems
- Additional management duties such as Inventory control as clinic needs expand
- Other duties as assigned
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
- Ability to deal with staff and clients in a professional manner. Able to direct the work of others, train/ develop employees, evaluate performance, and provide feedback.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing (email and text) with staff, fosters, rescue partners and the general public.
- Stress management skills with the ability to handle an array of situations from routine to emergency calmly and professionally and handle multiple tasks at one time.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment, decisiveness and creativity to problem solve.
- Embrace and foster change, with the ability to come up with solutions and regularly demonstrate flexibility.
- Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within AFRP with colleagues, volunteers, externs, rescue partners, and the general public, and be a team player.
- Comfortable and willing to accommodate multiple dogs and cats in work spaces.
- Bi-lingual in Spanish is a bonus, but not a requirement
- Ability to travel to multiple locations within target communities for off-site clinics as needed
- Ability to practice low-stress handling techniques
Education and Experience
- Current RVT license in the state of California
- One (1) year previous experience in a veterinary hospital or animal shelter
- Experience working in a shelter environment is a plus
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Work is performed in a veterinary clinic that is shared with another veterinary practice. There is potential for exposure to zoonotic diseases, dangerous and fractious animals, high noise levels, hazardous chemicals, anesthetics, and sharp objects.
- Restroom facilities are in the space occupied by the other veterinary practice. AFRP staff and volunteers are always guaranteed safe passage and access to the restrooms.
- Ability to work in a small clinic environment, specifically a small surgical unit.

- Must be able to interact with animals.
- Subject to dog and cat bites and scratches while handling animals of questionable temperament.
- Must be able to stand, walk, sit, talk, hear, stoop, bend, squat, kneel, grasp, grip, put fingers together firmly and reach above and below shoulder level and lift, push or pull 50 pounds for situations of restraining or moving animals and lifting food and animal care supplies.
- Ability to operate, maneuver and/or provide simple but continuous adjustments and repetitive movements on equipment such as surgical instruments, syringes, microscopes, diagnostic equipment, computer terminal, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
- Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs in performing movements requiring skill and training, such as performing surgery and giving injections.
- Ability to use hands to operate computers; flex the neck upward and downward; twist the neck and the waist.
- Occasionally, there may be situations requiring high stamina, such as training days or special events.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
