STUDENT SERVICES LIBRARIAN, FULL-TIME TENURE-TRACK

THE DEPARTMENT:

The Hartnell College Library serves the information needs of the college community at all sites. The main campus library building houses traditional college library resources and services including Circulation Services, Computer and Media Services, Reference Services, Technical Services, and an information competency classroom. The library’s online services include a chat reference service, ebooks and article databases, information competency classes, and research guides.

THE POSITION:

Under the general direction of the area dean or appropriate administrator, the selected candidate will perform a variety of professional librarian duties as the Instruction and Student Services Librarian and will fulfill the responsibilities of a full-time faculty member. This position is expected to work primarily in-person at Hartnell College’s main campus in Salinas, with occasional travel to other district locations.

Examples of Duties

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

  • coordination of library public services including reference, information literacy instruction, circulation, reserves, and outreach services;
  • build sustainable partnerships with faculty, staff, service areas, and administrators to best serve student needs;
  • participate in and extend the library’s outreach and assessment initiatives;
  • plan, assess, and coordinate library student services at all campus locations, including operations and policies related to circulation, reserve, media, reference, and interlibrary loans;
  • design and conduct instructional sessions including curriculum-integrated resources, information literacy, research and critical thinking skills, media and digital literacy and AI literacy;
  • embed DEIAA principles in all information literacy instruction;
  • develop Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs), teaching strategies, and instructional resources to instruct students and faculty on the complexities of AI in an information saturated environment;
  • develop instructional strategies and resources for students to engage with information in relevant and meaningful ways;
  • develop equitable and effective online instructional materials including Canvas credit courses, non-credit research workshops, and Research Guides (LibGuides);
  • plan, develop, revise, implement, and coordinate library curriculum;
  • build relationships and collaborate with faculty to embed information literacy concepts and skills and to integrate library resources into the curriculum;
  • plan, schedule, coordinate and deliver instruction in the use of library resources at all campus locations and through the campus learning management system;
  • provide reference and research consultations, assisting in regularly scheduled reference, instruction, and information services, including some evening and weekend hours;
  • participate in collection development in assigned disciplines;
  • teach library/information competency courses;
  • collaboratively develop and assess Service Area Outcomes (SAOs) for library services and student learning outcomes for library courses;
  • use the results of service area and student learning outcome assessment to make improvements;
  • participate in assignments and activities that support accreditation, institutional planning, equity and DEIAA practices, and institutional effectiveness;
  • participate in college governance, including serving on various committees;
  • represent the college in regional library consortias and participate in professional organizations;
  • participate in faculty recruitment and peer evaluation;
  • participate in department, college, and discipline specific activities;
  • attend faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development and orientation activities and other meetings as called by the dean, vice president, superintendent/president or designee;
  • plan and schedule reference services in collaboration with adjunct faculty

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a depth of knowledge in the field of library science. In addition, the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • ability to work effectively with colleagues in an environment that promotes innovation, teaching, learning, and service to a diverse student population;
  • ability to effectively work with students from diverse backgrounds who have a wide range of skills, motivations, preparation, and academic and career goals;
  • ability to work effectively in a participatory governance environment;
  • ability to develop culturally responsive curriculum, including curriculum delivered via various instructional modalities;
  • ability to participate in recruitment and articulation activities with local schools, colleges, and universities;
  • excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • ability to develop Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and to determine their effectiveness in helping students achieve their desired learning outcomes;
  • ability to utilize technology in the delivery of instruction and willingness to explore new technologies for instruction and learning;
  • knowledge of institutional accreditation, planning and continuous quality improvement;
  • knowledge of and commitment to the California Community College mission;
  • demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the community at-large.

Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Master’s degree in library science, or library and information science OR the equivalent.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT;
Full-time, tenure track Librarian faculty position. The starting faculty salary range is $78,685.00 to $157,676.00 annually based on 185 days per academic year. The successful candidate’s starting salary will be based on verified education and teaching experience. The district provides health benefits, which currently consist of full coverage for medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and a high percentage of coverage for eligible dependents. The employee assistance program provides basic life insurance for employees only. STRS (state teacher retirement system).
