Job Summary
Under general supervision, maintains order to provide safe/secure transportation for students. Duties include attending to students who may have medical, physical, behavioral, or emotional needs while they are being transported to and from school in District vehicles. May assist drivers in the loading, unloading, and securing of disabled students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Rides a school bus to provide safe and secure transportation for students.
- May assist drivers in the loading, unloading and securing of students and equipment.
- Maintains order and discipline on bus as required; monitors student activities and assures compliance with safety procedures; physically restrains aggressive children as necessary according to established procedures.
- May need to move about while bus is in motion to attend to students.
- Communicates with drivers, students, teachers, and parents regarding
schedules, seating arrangements and other related concerns or questions. - Maintains current knowledge of emergency evacuation procedures.
- Provides basic medical care and first aid to students according to established District protocols and procedures, as necessary.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- As necessary, responsible for receiving students’ prescription medication from the parent or guardian and delivering it to the appropriate employee at the school site, consistent with District policy and applicable law.
- In the event of a medical emergency, follow all applicable policies and the District’s written emergency care plan, including monitoring of student safety until the student can be transported to a facility to receive medical assistance.
- Monitors students with special needs until released to classroom personnel or parent for the purpose of ensuring the safe transportation of all passengers.
- Reports observations and/or incidents (e.g. discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc.)
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
- Behavior management and crisis prevention techniques for students;
- Proper methods and procedures involved in the care of students with special needs; Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy; Health and safety regulations; First aid and emergency evacuation procedures;
- Show patience when dealing with students
- Understand and relate to students with special needs
- Maintain order among students
- Lift students as needed
- Follow both oral and written directions
- Communicate in English both orally and in writing
- Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance
- Maintain cooperative and effective working relationships
- Learn the operation of wheelchairs, seat belts, safety vests, and wheelchair devices
- Learn the safe practices concerning school bus transportation and proper lifting techniques.
- Communicate in English and the language of the student under their charge
- Supervise student in order to maintain appropriate safety and order
- Follow oral and written instructions and directions in English
- Ability to understand student specific goals and plans
- Learn and implement specialized health care included n emergency health care plans
- Ability to work a split shift
- Learn and implement behavior management and crisis prevention techniques for students
- Proper methods and procedures involved in the care of students with special needs
- Learn and implement emergency evacuation procedures
- Handle information in a discreet and confidential manner
- Exercise reasonable judgment in unusual circumstances
- Learn and implement specialized health care included in emergency health care plans
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- CPR and First Aid certificate
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- One year of experience working with children.
- High School Diploma or equivalent
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Training and/or experience working with students with special needs.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Good physical condition
- Hearing and speaking to exchange information
- Seeing to monitor student activities
- Ability to assist special needs students/wheelchair users and lift/carry 50 lb
- Ability to maintain balance while vehicle is in motion
- Ability to physically restrain aggressive students
