We are actively seeking a Senior Cost Accountant to join a respected heavy civil and infrastructure construction company specializing in transportation, utility, and renewable energy projects across California. In this hands-on role, you’ll serve as a crucial link between operations and finance – analyzing project performance, improving job cost accuracy, and driving sound financial decisions that strengthen project profitability and compliance. You’ll work closely with leadership, field teams, and vendors to keep projects running efficiently and finances transparent.

What You’ll Do
- Lead all cost accounting activities and provide insights to management for California-based civil, utility, and renewable energy projects.
- Deliver clear, accurate reporting on project margins, budgets, forecasts, and WIP schedules.
- Use advanced construction accounting software such as Foundation or Heavy Job to track project costs and support data-driven decisions.
- Manage financial statement preparation, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, work‑in‑progress schedules, and cash flow statements, ensuring compliance with construction accounting standards.
- Partner with project managers and procurement to review and negotiate contracts, validate costs, and secure favorable vendor pricing.
- Manage collection of payments and project cost detailing.
- Analyze cost trends, identify issues early, and recommend corrective actions to protect profitability.
- Support internal and external audits with detailed documentation and financial accuracy.
- Mentor accounting staff, ensuring consistency in cost coding, WIP processes, and system utilization.
- Continuously improve accounting workflows for efficiency, accuracy, and transparency.
To Be Successful in This Role, You Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline.
- 8+ years of progressive cost accounting experience in construction—civil, utility, power, or renewable energy strongly preferred.
- CPA designation preferred but not required.
- Proficiency with Foundation, Sage, and construction job cost systems and advanced Excel skills.
- Experience in contract management and vendor negotiation within a construction context.
- Advanced knowledge of job cost accounting, WIP reporting, and percentage-of-completion methods.
- Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills, with the ability to guide project teams with confidence and clarity.
- A steady, solutions-oriented approach that supports multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
