DEFINITION:
Under general direction, of the Transportation Supervisor, and with direction from the School Bus Driver Instructor/Trainer, the Vehicle/ Van Driver operates a school vehicle or van over designated routes for the purpose of transporting students to and from assigned District
school and program sites. This job class is responsible for the safe transport of students to and from assigned school and program sites and for supervising the behavior of students while in a District transport vehicle.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following is a list of duties that are representative of the position and include but are not limited to:
- Operates a transportation vehicle within prescribed routes and time schedules daily
- Picks up and drops off students
- Escorts and assists children on and off vehicles and across streets or roadways, when required by law or as necessary
- Transports children and teachers on field trips and special activities to various locations, making departure and arrival times as scheduled
- Evacuates vehicle in a safe and timely manner when necessary and conducts periodic drills as required by law
- Fuel vehicles
- Maintains cleanliness of vehicles on the inside daily and washes vehicles as necessary to maintain external cleanliness
- Conducts safety and operations inspections of assigned vehicle daily, advises appropriate staff on repairs required
- Maintains accurate daily record of mileage, time, fuel, oil, student count, and route sheets
- Prepares routine reports as required
- Attends mandatory driver training programs to maintain knowledge of applicable codes and regulations as they apply to the operation of vehicles in the transporting of school children
- Administers first aid as necessary
- Reports any suspected cases of child abuse following district procedures
- Attends scheduled safety meetings and safety programs
- Maintains good order and proper discipline among the students on vehicle and encourages same while students are waiting at bus stops, following district and department policies regarding the disciplining of children, and contact with parents and other citizens
- May operate a wheelchair ramp and lift, safely and properly secure wheelchairs in vehicle
- Reports incidents that affect the safety of pupils
- Performs job related work as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older
- Any combination of training and experience which has provided the applicant with the required knowledge and abilities to successfully perform job duties
Knowledge of:
- Safe driving practices
- Proper first-aid practices and ability to implement first aid procedures
- Student transportation safety rules and regulations
- Geography of the District, including school and facility locations, major streets, and previously established routes
- California Motor Vehicle Code and Education Code applicable to the transportation of students
Ability to:
- Drive a district vehicle or other automotive equipment safely and efficiently
- Maintain order among students on vehicle
- Handle emergency situations efficiently, maintain composure, and apply reasonable and prudent judgment to fit the situation
- Recognize malfunctions in equipment and take appropriate action
- Use good judgment in recognizing scope of authority
- Learn and use technology and computer software applications as appropriate to the work environment
- Formulate and execute federal, state, district, and departmental policies, procedures, and directives, in accordance with assigned duties
- Perform under demanding and varied work schedule with ability to remain flexible and focused during interruptions and distractions
- Communicate effectively in the English language, both orally and in writing
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions in English without immediate supervision
- Understand and be sensitive to those of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
- Meet assigned schedules and timelines
- Basic mathematic sufficient to perform the duties of the position
- Maintain accurate, neat, and legible records and reports
- Maintain regular attendance and punctuality
- Work both independently and function effectively within a team setting while demonstrating leadership qualities
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Licenses and Certificates:
- A valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License, Class C. Must submit a valid DMV Printout
- A valid Medical Certificate
- A valid First Aid Certificate
- A valid CPR Certificate according to state guidelines
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in a public education environment working with children
