Under general professional and administrative guidance and supervision, the Counselor functions as a member of a treatment team to assist in the provision of individual, group, and supportive counseling services in accordance with the client’s plan for treatment, to assure that the health and daily living needs of each client is met, and to promote the maintenance of the recovery milieu within the residential facility.

POSTION REQUIREMENTS:

1. Education:

Completion of an alcohol/drug studies program from an accredited program/college; or an Associate of Art’s (AA) degree in a human service or related field is required.
2. Licensure/Certification:

Registration with an approved certifying body for certification as an alcohol/drug counselor is required.
Certificate in alcohol/drug studies from accredited program/college is preferred; or completion of majority of required units. Applicants who lack certification must have twice the experience to qualify for a Counselor position.
Registration with a state-approved certification body is required.
Valid California Class B Driver’s License is required, as necessary and appropriate.
3. Experience:

One (1) to two (2) year’s satisfactory employment in alcohol/drug recovery counseling;
Three (3) to four (4) year’s satisfactory employment in alcohol/drug recovery counseling is required for applicant’s who lack certification in alcohol/drug counseling from an accredited college.
4. Skills:

Thorough knowledge of alcoholism and other drug dependencies and appropriate counseling techniques; including but not limited to: the ability to recognize the early signs and symptoms of illness; the ability to promote the need for professional assistance; and the ability to recognize individuals who are under the influence of alcohol and/or other drugs.
Knowledge of State and county guidelines as applied to residential treatment and recovery programs;
Ability to facilitate didactic, recovery, 12-Step-oriented, and support groups and classes;
Documentation of progress and complications in client’s recovery process as required by State, County and board policies;
Knowledge of good housekeeping and sanitation principles.
Knowledge of the principles of nutrition, food preparation and storage, menu planning, and the ability to maintain compliance with such.
Knowledge of the principles of communicable illness prevention and control.
Considerable knowledge of community referral resources and the ability to use them appropriately. Ability to liaison with judicial system, social service, other agencies as required by needs of clients;
Good written and verbal communication skills;
Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team setting.
Fluency in both English and Spanish (bi-lingual) is preferred, but required.
5. Physical Demands and Special Job Conditions

In good physical health as verified by a health screening.
Must be insurable with Door to Hope’s automobile insurer with acceptable driving record from the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Current CPR/First Aid certification.
Tuberculosis clearance (within 7 days of hire, annually thereafter).
Moderate walking and standing. Position may require extended sitting.
Ability to assist a debilitated client.
Voice level that is audible to groups in a class setting.
Ability to twist, lift, bend to store and retrieve records.
Flexibility and dexterity to assist in basic household duties.
Ability to tolerate moderate to heavy stress levels.
Must remain awake during all shifts.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

Assists in the development of the client’s individual treatment plan based on history, assessments, and progress and complications experienced in the course of the client’s treatment.
Provides didactic, group and individual counseling services in accordance with the program’s written plan for services and the client’s individual treatment plan.
Provides case management services to designated clients, as assigned by the Sr. Counselor and under the guidance and direction of the treatment team. Case management services include but are not limited to:
updates and modifies the individual treatment plan as necessary and appropriate,
coordinates and liaisons as appropriate with other allied health, social service, educational, vocational, and/or judicial/correctional professionals to provide for the client’s overall health and rehabilitative needs,
individually counsels assigned clients on a weekly and as-needed basis, to develop individualized rapport, to coordinate all aspects of the treatment plan, and to guide and/or review the client’s individual recovery assignments,
introduces the client to the 12 Step Program and promotes meaningful participation and sponsorship, and
Develops the client’s individual and multi-dimensional discharge plan.
Effectively assists clients in articulating and understanding the individual impact of their addiction on their functioning and effectively motivates clients to apply appropriate corrective measures.
Maintains adequate communication with supervisors and other members of the treatment team to provide consistency and continuity of care. Participates as a team member in case planning and review sessions.
Demonstrates the ability to develop and present didactic recovery information in a presentation/discussion format that promotes understanding and utilizes good communication skills.
Schedules and/or conducts screening and intake assessments; provides information and referrals and documents such to referents and their family members as appropriate and necessary. Maintains mutually productive and beneficial relationships with Monterey County Behavioral Health Access staff, probation officers and/or Drug Court representatives, and other referral sources…
Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations with clients and positive and effective relations with co-workers and supervisors to promote efficiency and a positive work environment.
Promotes client’s behavioral compliance with the Principles and Guidelines of Door to Hope and maintains a safe and comfortable environment for residents at all times. Assures that resident’s basic health needs are met. Provides referrals as needed and documents such in the resident’s file. Assures that resident’s prescribed medication is logged appropriately and complies with all medication self-administration procedures.
Legibly maintains documentation of the client’s course of treatment in the client record. Assures that all documentation standards are met. Utilizes the Staff Log, as appropriate, to communicate to other staff.
Demonstrates the ability to deal with stress, anger, and/or frustration in a professional manner.
Will monitor and do utilization reviews on all charts that are at the residence.
Responds to unanticipated, unusual, and/or crisis situations with good judgment and/or demonstrates the ability to collaborate with supervisors as appropriate to the situation. Utilizes good crisis intervention skills, including suicidal risk assessment, and utilizes medical and community referral resources appropriately.
Demonstrates the ability to meet quality assessment and performance improvement indicators and outcomes and respond to supervision receptively when thresholds are not met.
Ability to perform additional duties as required by needs of program.
