Hartnell College seeks a dedicated Art Professor to teach courses and be the gallery director. In this key role, you will contribute to developing the art program and lead gallery operations.

The position

Hartnell College is seeking an instructor who can teach in the Art Program (60%) and will serve as the gallery director (40%). Under the general direction of the area dean, the art faculty will be responsible for teaching students, contributing to the program, and taking a leadership role in the art department and gallery operations. This assignment may include teaching at any of the college’s campus sites-including the Rising Scholars Program; day, evening, or weekend classes; large lectures; smaller seminar-like classes; performance or technical classes; lab-based classes; distance learning; and using multiple teaching methodologies.

Examples of Duties

Representative Duties Classroom Faculty

• Coordinate, plan, organize, and instruct lecture and lab courses as assigned;
• Coordinate, plan, prepare, present, evaluate, and deliver classroom instruction and related activities, including developing and revising curriculum;
• Using a computer and advanced technologies in instruction and maintaining currency in the field;
• Offer student advising and assistance;
• Assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies, and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussion;
• Develop and file appropriate syllabi for each course taught, ensuring that each syllabus conforms to the required and approved curriculum, has appropriate content and pedagogy, course-specific student learning outcomes, and reflects currency in the field;
• Recommend textbooks and other instructional materials, including classroom and laboratory equipment, to the dean;
• Keep students informed about their progress through the prompt evaluation and grading of papers and other work;
• Maintain and report accurate and complete scholastic records, including attendance records;
• Participate in program and curriculum review and development;
• Develop and assess student learning and program-level outcomes;
• Utilize the results of student learning outcomes assessment to make improvements in teaching and learning;
• Post and maintain office hours for student consultations;
• Participate in student recruitment and articulation programs;
• In coordination with the performance groups on campus, support student participation in performance-based opportunities in the designated programs;
• Participate in faculty recruitment and peer evaluation;
• Collegially participate in department, college, and discipline-specific activities;
• Participate in assignments and activities that support accreditation, institutional planning, and institutional effectiveness;
• Participate in college governance, including serving on various committees;
• Participate in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations;
• Attend faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development and orientation activities, and other meetings as called by the dean, vice president, superintendent/president, or designee.

Representative Duties Gallery Director:

• Organizes, coordinates, and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Hartnell Gallery; assists in the development of operational plans and gallery programming and activities; maintains gallery visual presence through the design of onsite, printed, and online graphics; makes recommendations for changes in gallery procedures and practices to serve students and patrons better or improve efficiencies.
• Interacts with students and the public; provides faculty instructional program support; coordinates student and outside exhibitions and installations, including gallery preparation, installation, packing, and unpacking condition reports, and other details; develops and coordinates the production of educational didactic labels, materials, and programs relating to exhibitions; develops catalogs and gallery price lists when appropriate.
• Provides input in selecting, training,g and providing day-to-day lead work guidance and coordination with student staff;
• Promotes the gallery utilizing email, online, and social media announcements; edits and sends press releases written by the gallery director; develops, coordinates, and implements community engagement events and activities.
• Assists in developing and monitoring the gallery budget; maintains and purchases inventory and supplies; develops artwork inventories and descriptions for insurance purposes; maintains a variety of standard office and specialized records and files; creates and maintains spreadsheets and databases to track exhibits, activities, and services; may participate in basic grant administration functions.
• Represents the District and/or gallery on a variety of internal and external committees; develops partnerships with community agencies, business/industry, and local government; liaisons with local high schools, other colleges, and academic institutions.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Techniques and materials related to art gallery displays and exhibitions, including storage, packaging, and display techniques for various collections such as paintings, photography, film/video, and sculpture.
• Processing and cataloging of records for exhibits and collections.
• Principles of design and trends in typography and graphic design.
• Organize and oversee the day-to-day operations, activities, and services of a community college art gallery and exhibit space.
• Ability to work effectively with colleagues in an environment that promotes innovation, teaching, learning, and service to a diverse student population;
• Ability to effectively work with students from diverse backgrounds who have a wide range of skills, motivations, preparation, and academic and career goals;
• Ability to work effectively in a participatory governance environment;
• Ability to develop curriculum, including curriculum delivered via various instructional modalities;
• Ability to participate in recruitment and articulation activities with local schools, colleges, and universities;
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
• Ability to maintain subject matter currency;
• Ability to develop Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and to determine their effectiveness in helping students achieve their desired learning outcomes;
• Ability to utilize technology in the delivery of instruction and willingness to explore new technologies for instruction and learning;
• Knowledge of institutional accreditation, planning, and continuous quality improvement;
• Knowledge of and commitment to the California Community College mission;
• Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the community-at-large

Master’s degree in Art, Fine Arts, Studio Arts, Art History

OR Bachelors’ Degree in Art, Fine Arts, Studio Arts AND a Master’s Degree in Humanities

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT;Full-time, tenure track Art and Gallery Director faculty position.The starting faculty salary range is $70,608.00 to $149,154.00 annually based on 175 days per academic year. The successful candidate’s starting salary will be based on verified education and teaching experience.The district provides health benefits, which currently consist of full coverage for medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and a high percentage of coverage for eligible dependents. The employee assistance program provides basic life insurance for employees only. STRS (state teacher retirement system).

Hiring & Selection Process

A select group of candidates will be invited to participate in the first round of interviews, which will take place on the Hartnell College campus in Salinas, CA. The first round will involve a panel interview with faculty, staff, and the Dean. During this round, candidates will be asked to deliver a teaching demonstration on a topic that will be provided upon receipt of the interview invitation. Additionally, candidates will respond to a series of scripted questions. These questions will be made available for review 30 minutes before the interview. We anticipate conducting the first-round interviews during the first three weeks of April 2025.
Candidates selected for the second round of interviews will meet with the college president and vice president. This round may also include a 50-minute teaching demonstration delivered to a group of Hartnell College students. The second-round interviews are expected to occur in the last week of April or early May.
The final decision regarding the outcome of the interview process will be made in mid-May. Start Date: Fall 2025
