Under general direction to promote, protect and improve student health; plan and implement school health
programs; provide consultation services to schools; oversee and direct Health Aides at various school sites;
develop, maintain and utilize student health records, submit required health forms to various agencies.
● Provides effective management, leadership, and communication in areas of assignment;
● Conducts vision and hearing screenings, referrals and follow-ups;
● Conducts other health appraisals including dental, nutrition, physical disabilities, mental health and
child abuse cases;
● Conducts faculty and staff health consultations;
● Provides in-service training for school personnel regarding laws, policies and special programs;
● Serves on special education committees;
● Writes and /or revises health forms; submits required health reports;
● Provides classroom instruction on dental, nutrition, hygiene, family-life and disease education;
● Maintains and supervises student health records;
● May be called upon to serve on various health related committees; monitors and trains staff regarding
health procedures;
● Serves on IEP teams and complies with Salinas City Elementary School District Policies and
Administrative Regulations, State of California Education Code and Health and Welfare Codes and
● Performs other job-related tasks as required.
● Assists in the control and prevention of communicable disease by providing information to staff,
students and parents about protective measures against communicable disease.
● Establishes contact with appropriate members of the medical community as part of follow-up
procedures of chronic and communicable disease cases.
● Works with and acts as liaison to school health committees, county health officials and other agencies
concerned with the health and welfare of students.
● Provides emergency care for serious accidents and illnesses which occur at school.
● When available, serves as a resource for school personnel in such cases as needed.
● Applicable treatment of health concerns and illnesses of the pediatric population
● Knowledge of child development, developmental disabilities, assessment, habilitation techniques,
family intervention and communication skills required
● Ability to remain calm in an emergency situation
● Maintains and encourages confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issue
● Prepare comprehensive reports.
● Keep lines of communication open between nurse and teachers, nurse and administration, nurse and
parents, and nurse and special education department.
● Interact with and maintain cooperative working relationships with all levels of staff and the public at
multiple school sites.
● Communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing.
● Possess and maintain CPR and First Aid certification.
● Bachelor of Arts or Science Degree from an accredited college or university.
● Registered Nurse (R.N.) Licensure
● Possess or is eligible for a valid credential issued by the California Commission on Prep. and Licensing
authorizing performance of service as a School Nurse.
● Previous experience in treatment and evaluation of children.
● Ability to speak and write Spanish
● Ability to see for purposes of observing students, reading correspondence, documents and other printed
● Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels in person and/or on the telephone.
● Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation in person
and/or on the telephone and addressing groups.
● Manual dexterity sufficient to write, use telephone, business machines (including computers) and make
adaptations to equipment and operate specialized equipment designed for persons with physical
● Physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, to reach overhead, climb, run, hop, jump,
balance and kneel.
● Physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment (office, district, school or home
site-to-site), drives an automobile, and appropriately responds to emergency situations.
● Physical strength sufficient to lift 45 pounds.
● Physical stamina sufficient to stand or walk for prolonged periods of time.
● Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid
conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions.
