JOB DESCRIPTION: Under direction of the Supervisor of Student Nutrition and/or designee,
perform routine tasks assisting in the preparation and service for the School Breakfast Program,
National School Lunch Program, after school snack program, and catering programs; provide
meals for outside agencies; observe federal regulations and standards of sanitation and safety.
Maintain food service facilities, equipment and utilities in a clean and sanitary condition.
RESPONSIBLE TO: Supervisor of Student Nutrition
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSILITIES:
Prepare and appropriately portion food items as required (e.g. fruits, vegetables, sandwiches,
hot and cold menu items)
Assist in cleaning and storing kitchen utensils, equipment, pots, pans and kitchen appliances
Maintain a clean and sanitary working environment
Perform routine cooking tasks as required
Assist with the receiving, storage and rotation of food items and supplies as required
Assist with the preparation of deliveries to school sites
Ensure foods are stored and handled appropriately
Maintain and record proper temperatures of food items, refrigerators, and freezer
Maintain various records related to food items, inventory and assigned activities
Sweep and mop floors and remove trash from kitchen area as required
Observe health, safety and sanitation practices
Work as a team member
Greet customers in person or over the telephone with courtesy and diplomacy; ascertain
nature of business and provide general information
May be required to drive a district vehicle for the delivery of food and supplies
Recieve and prepare catering orders
Load, deliver and set up catering requests (food, drinks and supplies) to both in-district and
community sites
Substitute at school site caferterias as necessary
Perform other related duties as required
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
Basic food preparation techniques, methods required for food preparation such as peeling,
cutting and assembling ingredients; Methods and procedures of large scale kitchen operation;
Proper phone etiquette; modern office machines, methods and practices; Computers; English
verbal and written communication skills sufficient to meet the requirements of the position; Basic
math.

Education and Experience:
Catering experience is highly desirable
Experience in the handling, use, care, and storage of food service equipment
Large quantity food handling and kitchen sanitation practices
Class C Driver’s License
High School diploma and /or equivalency is required
Ability to:
Communicate in English effectively in oral and written form. Understand and follow oral and
written instructions in an independent manner. Read, write and perform arithmetical calculations
at a level necessary for accurate and efficient job performance. Work cooperatively with
students, staff and public and maintain confidentiality.
Licenses and Certificates:
Valid ServSafe Certificate (must obtain within six months of employment)
Valid California Driver’s License and evidence of insurability
May require pre-employment physical examination
WORKING CONDITIONS
Environment:
Food Service environment subject to heat from ovens and cold from refrigerators and freezers
Work is predominantly inside and generally provides protection from weather conditions, but
not necessarily from temperature changes
Work is primarily done on hard floor surfaces
Physical Demands:
Sitting or standing for extended periods of time
Vision to read small print
Hearing and speaking to exchange information
Lifting and carrying of items up to 50 lbs.
Pushing or pulling moderate to heavy objects as assigned
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate food service equipment
Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching
Seeing to monitor food quality and quantity
Light to heavy physical effort; standing for extended periods of time; ability to reach in all
directions; periodic lifting, carrying, loading and unloading of food items and supplies
Moderate stress level
Hazards:
Cold from freezers
Exposure to very hot foods, equipment and metal objects
Working around knives, slicers or other sharp objects
Exposure to cleaning chemicals and fumes
