POSITION SUMMARY: The Shelter and Housing Lead is responsible for supporting residents with their daily living needs while ensuring the shelter operates safely and smoothly. This role includes conducting intake assessments to determine service eligibility, maintaining accurate client records, preparing rooms for new residents, and performing regular security checks. The Shelter and Housing Lead also provides overall shelter coverage and serves as the primary point of contact for Shelter Advocates during assigned shifts, particularly when the Housing Service Manager is unavailable. This is an awake, onsite position with shifts that may include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays to ensure continuous program coverage, acting as Shelter Service Manager in absence of Shelter Service Manager.

ROLE: The Shelter and Housing Lead is responsible for providing survivors of domestic violence and performing related work as required including direct case management, responding to callers on the crisis hotline during business, after hours, weekends and/or holidays; handling intakes for victims of domestic violence seeking shelter services; distributing information about agency programs and services; providing referrals to community legal, medical, and social service, ensuring a safe environment within a 24- hours domestic violence, acting as Shelter Service Manager in absence of Shelter Service Manager.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate in the implementation of all shelter program procedures and including enforcement of house rules and security systems;
  • Manage resources for safe house residents including food, transportation, food bank, and in-kind donations;
  • Ensures effective communication between vendors, donors, volunteers, and safe house;
  • Provide relief, as needed, for call outs that may include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Coordinates with Housing Service Manager to approve admission of clients and is aware of ongoing case management for clients.
  • Participate in maintaining a rotating 24-hour coverage on the agency’s crisis line and shelter facility may include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays;
  • Answer forwarded crisis line call take on-call when scheduled during rotation;
  • Respond to emergencies at night as needed;
  • Assist with shelter operations, maintenance, repairs, overall facility cleanliness, pick up shelter-related donations, and purchase of food and supplies, as necessary;
  • Conduct intakes and assessments with potential clients
  • Maintain clear and concise client files and records and assist in gathering statistical information in compliance with funding requirements.
  • Responsible for completing grant reports;
  • Train/Onboard new advocates as needed.
  • Ensure advocates complete daily/weekly tasks.
  • Responsible for reviewing and upkeeping waitlist, crisis line intakes, volunteer hours, shelter activities, inventory, and community meetings.
  • Handle distribution, tracking, and reporting of petty cash.
  • Provide retention services for clients.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Bilingual/Bicultural (Spanish/English) preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related area Required (Social Work, Social Services,
  • Public Administration or other related degrees)
  • One year of relevant experience providing client services in a similar environment. (Preferred)
  • Completion of 40-hour domestic violence training program (agency will provide on-job training).
  • Knowledge of intimate partner violence and community resources. (Preferred)
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including some weekends, early morning hours, evening hours and holidays. (Required)
  • Ability to work with people of diverse ethnic, cultural, religious, socio-economic backgrounds. (Required)
  • Experience maintaining personal/professional boundaries.
  • Valid California driver’s license, proof of automobile insurance, and reliable personal transportation.
  • DMV record report. (Required)
  • Mandatory Reporter training (agency will provide training)
  • First aid and CPR training (agency will provide training)
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, and volunteer management.

 

FUNCTIONS:

  • Serve as liaison between DV Shelter residents and confidential community services where appropriate.
  • Provide trauma-informed services and information to crisis hotline callers and shelter residents.
  • Participate in and provide services to survivors of domestic violence including crisis intervention, assessment, advocacy, emergency transportation, information and referrals as needed.
  • Participate in maintaining a rotating 24-hour coverage on the agency’s crisis line and shelter facility.
  • Other duties as assigned and/or needed for the agency.

PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • During working hours, employees may sit or stand for long periods.
  • Lift objects up to 50 pounds from floor to waist level and carry them for brief periods.
  • Bend and stoop while filing or sorting through donations.
  • Twist and reach while working at a safe house location.
  • Must pass a background ID check (Livescan/fingerprints) and provide DMV record.
  • Ability to travel within Monterey County when required.
