Summary – This position is responsible for transporting and delivering freight by driving gasoline, diesel-powered, or
zero emission tractor-trailer combinations or straight trucks long distances interstate and intrastate. May work as a
member of a two-person team-driving tractor with sleeper bunk.

Essential Functions: (Essential functions, as defined under the American with Disability Act, may

class)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (These are not in any hierarchical order)
• Hook and unhook trailers from the tractor itself including cranking lever to raise and lower landing gear on
semi-trailers. Load and unload trailers with or without assistance, and with or without mechanical freight
handling equipment.
• Perform frequent lifting, pulling, pushing, and carrying of freight.
• Perform pre trip and post trip inspections with pictures and submit electronically or with physical copies as
directed by the supervisor.
• Check shipping papers to determine the nature of each load, destinations, routing, and any special instructions.
• Apply knowledge of commercial driving and skills in maneuvering vehicle at varying speeds in difficult
situations, such as heavy traffic, inclement weather or in tight loading/unloading areas.
• Ensure that all shipping documentation (bills of lading, shipping orders, freight bills, etc.) required to move with
shipments is available for inspection and that appropriate paperwork accompanies shipment when delivered.
• Maintain records required for compliance with local, state, and federal regulations including driver logs, records
of fuel purchases, vehicle inspections, mileage records and other records required by law.
• These records may be maintained electronically.
• Perform all duties in accordance with all local, state, and federal regulations for the safe operation of a
commercial motor vehicle.
• Report all accidents involving driver or company equipment immediately.
• Report all traffic violations received immediately. Report highway safety hazards noted in route.
• Promptly report any delay due to breakdowns, weather or traffic conditions or other emergencies, or in the event
of irregularities relating to pick up or delivery of cargo.
• Help develop and train newer drivers.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications– To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty
satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge,skill and/ or ability required.
• Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement.
• Must be at least 21 years of age
• Minimum 3 month’s commercial driving experience
• Must have an acceptable DMV driving record.
• All Drivers must pass pre-employment substance abuse screening & DOT physical
• Must understand and follow all DOT regulations governing safe driving hours of service, inspection,
and maintenance.
• Must have the ability to read, write and perform simple mathematical calculations with mental ability to
handle receipts, read maps, road signs, maintain logs, etc.
• Must have working knowledge of vehicle safety and control systems.
• Must be available for around-the-clock trips to accommodate freight movements.
• Must observe and comply with all company policies and safety practices.
• Must meet the English communication standard set by FMCSA.
• Must be able to use and enter data into electronic logging devices.
• Must meet or exceed the medical standards of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Education and/ or Experience:
Three (3) months driving experience in a commercial vehicle.
Language Skills: Must meet the communicate effectively in English based on the competencies set by FMCSA.
Ability to read and understand manifests and other driver paperwork. Must be able to complete inspection reports and
accident reports.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate simple math such as adding, subtracting, and multiplying.
Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee
to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

• Must be able to bend, walk, stoop, and lift to 50 lbs. for a prolonged period.
• Must be able to sit and remain alert while driving for an aggregate period of up to 14 hours.
• Must be able to shift manual transmission and operate foot pedals.
• Must be able to perform frequent squatting to handle and position freight.
• Must be able to perform frequent crouching to handle and position freight.
• Must be able to enter and exit the vehicle’s cab 10 to 20 times a day. Cab floor level is generally from 36 to 66
inches above ground level, with entry and exit achieved with the assistance of various configurations of steps
and handholds; also requires occasional bending, twisting, climbing, squatting, crouching, and balancing.
• Must be able to perform frequent pushing or pulling of freight weighing up to 1200 lbs. on rolling racks. •
Must be able to frequently perform carrying freight weighing 3 pounds to 50 pounds of varying size and
• shape for 50 feet without mechanical aid
• Must be able to occasionally reach for freight above shoulder level, at waist level and below waist level.
• Must be able to occasionally reach above shoulder level, at waist level and below waist level for
• maneuvering and directing the controls to operate the truck and trailer and lift gate.
• Must be able to operate a lift gate with proper regard for personal safety and the safety of persons in the
proximity of the loading and unloading areas.
• Must be able to load and unload full trailers of freight weighing as much as 40,000 lbs. This type of activity
could precede or follow as much as 11 hours of driving.
• Must be able to stand and/or walk for extended periods on surfaces such as concrete, wood, metal, gravel,
asphalt, and sometimes on slippery and wet surfaces.
• Must be able to hook and unhook various commercial vehicle combinations, manually lower and raise landing
gear, operate the fifth wheel release lever, lock and release pestle-hooks, attach and release safety chains, open
and close cargo doors, climb into and out of vehicles, fuel vehicles and check engine oil and coolant levels.
• The employee must be able to operate equipment in a safe matter.
• Requires agility in each hand.
The employee may be required to work varying hours including weekends and holidays.
Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee
encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Drivers may spend a large percentage of time outdoors,
exposed to potentially difficult environmental conditions. Drivers may be subject to irregular work schedules,
temperature and weather extremes, long trips, short notice for assignment of a trip, tight delivery schedules, delays on
route and other stresses and fatigue related to driving large commercial motor vehicle on crowded streets and highways
in all kinds of weather.
Drivers typically spend 50-75% of on-duty time in the truck. While driving, operators are exposed to noise
and vibration levels, which may be higher than those typically experienced in passenger cars. The employee
may be subject to irregular work schedules.
