Healthy Meal Initiative Non-Profit

Chef Ann Foundation’s Healthy School Food Pathway (HSFP) Pre-Apprenticeship program is a paid, 7-week work-based learning experience that aims to prepare individuals for job opportunities in healthy, scratch-cook school food programs, as well as in adjacent fields such as nutrition and dietetics, culinary, restaurant management, food justice, and sustainable food systems.

The program supports workforce readiness and professional growth for new, incumbent, and displaced school food operators, creating a pipeline from entry-level positions through management that culminates in leadership. This offers professionals the resources, hands-on training, and network to become confident leaders that have in-depth knowledge and experience in creating and running successful scratch-cook meal programs.

The Pre-Apprenticeship program was designed for California residents who have some to no experience in school food or scratch cooking. It’s also for current school food workers who want to expand their skills, California community college students interested in exploring a culinary career supporting children’s health, and workers who have been displaced from other careers. We partner with nearly 50  school districts across the state of California — including those in Monterey County and beyond — to link career seekers to this unique hands-on learning experience in scratch-cook food operations. Upon completion, pre-apprentices will receive a professional certificate acknowledged by the State of California and by the Department of Labor.

*The Spring 2025 Pre-Apprenticeship Program runs from March 31 – May 23, 2025.*

*Applications open up on November 11, 2024 and close on February 3, 2025.*
