A hazardous materials (hazmat) removal worker, also known as a HazMat technician, identifies, removes, and disposes of harmful substances. They also clean up and neutralize flammable, corrosive, or toxic materials.
Responsibilities
- Remove hazardous materials like asbestos, lead, mold, and radioactive waste
- Clean up spills from train or truck accidents
- Remove or limit contamination from emergencies
- Prepare hazardous materials for removal or storage
- Comply with safety procedures and federal laws
- Operate machines or equipment to remove, package, store, or transport waste materials
- Identify waste products for recycling or reuse
Training and certification
- Specialized training and certification in hazardous materials handling
- Confined entry permit
- Courses mandated by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for workers at nuclear facilities
Safety
- Hazmat work is dangerous and workers wear protective suits and respirators for hours at a time
- Hazmat workers work in confined spaces or at great heights
