This is an hourly, full-time (40hrs/week), 12 months benefited position dependent upon continued grant funding.

DEPARTMENT/PROGRAM SUMMARY
TRIO Upward Bound (UB) is a federally funded program designed to increase the college participation of low- income and potential first-generation college-bound students. TRiO UB is designed to encourage participants to complete high school and continue their education at the post-secondary level by offering academic support, informational workshops, guidance, motivation and advocacy to program participants, their parents and target schools. The program provides required and permissible services as expressed in federal legislation/regulations. CSUMB is proud to host two TRiO Upward Bound (UB) grants, supporting 4 high schools in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties.
The programs consist of an Associate Director, two Educational Advising Specialist, an Administrative Assistant person, and a team of undergraduate student Educational Advising Assistants, Mentors, and Tutors. As part of the Pre-College Programs TRiO UB and other educational equity programs provide the campus and target schools with retention and support services for participants.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Educational Advising Specialist, under the supervision of the Associate Director for UB, is responsible for representing CSUMB Upward Bound at assigned target schools via weekly school visits, community and college events and during scheduled program activities and services. The Advising Specialist will also be responsible for conducting recruitment and submitting recommendation of potential participants; providing academic career, college, financial aid advisement, and assisting high school senior participants with the college admissions and financial aid process. During the summer, the advisor is responsible for providing guidance to and supervision of participants in a six-week residential program.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include. but are not limited to. the following:
• Assist in the planning, implementing, supervising, and evaluating project activities.
• Establish and maintain effective communication with all staff, students, parents, and partners.
• Develop and conduct individual and small group counseling services and academic, career, college and financial workshops for program participants and their families.
• Participate in the recruitment process by interviewing, evaluating, and selecting eligible participants.
• Work closely with Associate Director to recruit, hire, supervise, and evaluate UB tutors/mentors.
• Organize social, cultural, and recreational activities and field trips during the summer and academic year, including college visits & senior retreats.
• Provide residential support during six-week residential summer program..
• In conjunction with the Associate Director and instructors, plan summer curriculum.
• Consult with participants, high school teachers, and UB liaison to monitor participants’ progress.
• Maintain appropriate records to ensure compliance with grant regulations and reporting requirements, and to facilitate program evaluation.
• Contribute and assist with the preparation and submittal of Annual Performance Reports to U.S. Department of Education and other reports required by the Corporation and/or CSUMB.
• Provide the Associate Director regular oral and written progress reports.
• Serve as liaison to the campus target schools, community agencies, and general public.
• Handle sensitive and/or confidential documents and information where judgement and discretion are essential.
• Ensure confidentiality of all program records and other sensitive information.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
• Promote and maintains an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service within the program and campus community.
• Atten workshops, conferences, and advisory meetings as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Sciences, College Student Personnel or closely related field required.
• Experience working with low-income, first-generation college bound students; experience working with high school students from diverse backgrounds.
• Experience in providing workshops and educational activities to large and diverse groups.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

The hourly hiring range for this position is $24. Classification: Grade 3, Staff. This is a non-exempt position and as such is eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
